Mindful Botanica is a small, dedicated team brought together by a shared respect for plants, place, and thoughtful land care. While we occasionally collaborate with additional helpers for specific projects, the team members below are the people you’re most likely to work with and see in your garden.
Sam
Sam Jesse is the founder and driving force behind Mindful Botanica, LLC. With a degree in biology and multiple horticultural certifications, Sam brings a deep understanding of plant ecology, seasonal rhythms, and site-specific design to every project.
With over a decade of hands-on experience in client gardens, Sam’s work is both rooted in observation and practice. She approaches each space with a focus on thoughtful garden design, ecological stewardship, and long-term care, helping landscapes grow more beautiful and resilient over time.
Based in Michigan, Sam leads design and project work locally while also guiding projects and expanding services in Costa Rica alongside her husband, Wesley.

Wesley
Wesley Mata leads Mindful Botanica’s on-the-ground work in Costa Rica, overseeing garden care, lot maintenance, and landscape projects throughout the southwest region. With extensive hands-on experience in tropical landscapes and fast-growing conditions, he brings both skill and adaptability to each space he works in.
With a strong understanding of local plants and terrain, Wesley ensures projects are carried out with efficiency, care, and respect for the land. His steady presence and dedication make him an essential part of Mindful Botanica’s work in Costa Rica.

Kullan
Kullan has been a part of the Mindful Botanica team for the past two seasons, working alongside Sam in client gardens. With a calm and positive presence, he brings care and attention to each space he helps maintain.
He continues to grow his knowledge of plant care and is known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn. A thoughtful and steady team member, Kullan is a valued part of the Mindful Botanica crew.
Garden Assistant
Michelle
Michelle has been part of the Mindful Botanica crew for the past two seasons, joining for larger projects and lending an extra set of skilled hands when needed. With a strong work ethic and a sharp eye for detail, she brings both care and precision to every garden she works in.
Known affectionately as the “mulch queen,” Michelle has a natural talent for tying garden beds together, creating a finished look that enhances the overall space. She approaches each workday with energy and positivity, always ready to see a project through ~ even when the weather has other plans.
